5k Training Plan Beginner
Have you always wanted to know how it feels to cross a finish line? Are you looking forward to running your first 5k? If either of these things sound like you, then our 5k training plans for beginners can get you there. We offer three different levels of training for our 5k runners, and every level is personalized to your needs and current abilities. Our beginners level training program is a 12 week course that will take you from walking your way through 3.1 miles to finding your pace and running your way to the finish line.
There are a total of four phases that we use to prepare you for race day. Phase one and two will last for three weeks each; phase three will be four weeks; and phase four will be two weeks. These phases will incorporate a mixture of walking and jogging, with increasing intervals of jogging, and aerobic training exercises to get you to a steady pace for 3.1 miles. We have a tried-and-true system, and when you trust RunDoyen to prepare you for race day you are sure to meet your goals.
5k Training Plan Intermediate
Maybe you are a little more experienced and looking to improve your time on your upcoming 5k. We have you covered! Our 5k training plan for intermediate runners is a stepwise process that includes specific workouts and distances that will get you in the best shape to bring your time down. A combination of planned runs, aerobic worjouts, hill repeats, and more is designed to prepare your body for the race and give you confidence in your abilities.
This program is also a 12-week course with four phases. Phase one will last for two weeks; phase two will be four weeks; and phases three and four will each take 3 weeks. The planned runs peak at 25 miles per week, building up to and gradually decreasing from 25 miles before and after the peak while also incorporating strength and aerobic exercises.
FAQ
How do I prepare the day before a 5k?
The day before a race can be crucial for your success because how you prepare and treat your body before putting it to the test is going to determine how it performs under stress. Probably the most important thing to do the day before the race is to get plenty of sleep to ensure that your body is not dragging while trying to compete. Next, make sure you keep your run light for the day prior to your race, focusing on keeping loose and running at pace at intervals during your jog. Finally, you should focus on getting high energy foods on the menu for the day before your race to ensure you have a good energy store.
How do you prepare for a running race on the day?
Similarly to the importance of the day before the race, the day of the race is just as crucial. Once again, getting good sleep the night prior to race day is essential. Additionally, you should have a plan for every part of the day (departure/arrival time, packet pickup, warmup routine, etc.) to ensure that you do not become stressed by the details of the day. You also need to stay well-hydrated throughout the morning and even into the race. Finally, your attitude is crucial to your success, so keep a positive outlook, relax, and enjoy the run!
How do I receive or view my training?
For customer accessibility, RunDoyen is closely partnered with Final Surge. Final Surge is a top-rated training log app that keeps us all organized as we work together to get you to race day. For our training programs, such as the 5k training plan, 10k training plan, and more, the Surge app will house your training calendar with all of your scheduled workouts and runs for the duration of the training period. For our athletes interested in coaching services, the Surge app is both a calendar and chat space for the coach and athlete to discuss progression and leave any notes either of them may have on the training.
What if I get injured or want to pause my plan?
We at RunDoyen are flexible with our athletes and at all times want what is best for you and your performance. If you get injured during training or feel the need to pause the plan for any reason, then contact your coach or our RunDoyen support team. Unlike longer road races, such as the 10K run and marathon, the 5K distance is not commonly contested by elite distance runners. With that being said, running a 5k may be the best option for a newbie or casual runner. If this sounds like you, but you don’t quite know where to start, then look into the RunDoyen 5k training plan for beginners. It will progress your training gradually, and you will increase your aerobic endurance, pushing all the way through your first 3.1 miles. Maybe you are a casual runner with one or two 5ks under your belt: we have the perfect plan to help you improve your time and boost your results. Whatever your running ability, RunDoyen can help you excel and begin setting new personal benchmarks.
