Coach's Accomplishments

Training Style

I hold the belief that every athlete is unique, and it is this belief that shapes my coaching philosophy. I strongly advocate for an approach that tailors training to the specific needs of each individual. Recognizing the inherent differences among athletes and being able to customize their training regimens is paramount to unlocking their full potential.

I advocate for a diverse approach to training, ensuring the incorporation of both strength training and cross-training when deemed necessary.

My coaching philosophy has been significantly shaped by a combination of personal experiences, including interactions with past coaches and my own training journey, as well as extensive research into the philosophies of other coaches. I see myself as a dedicated student of the sport, constantly seeking opportunities to enhance my knowledge. My aim is to continually refine my understanding and skills in order to better support my athletes’ performance.

Dave Berdan

On the athletics front, Dave carved out a reasonable career chasing his dreams in the world of distance running. His journey included numerous successes, among them two wins at the Baltimore Marathon. Dave remains an active and influential figure within the Baltimore running community, making valuable contributions to the TV coverage of the Baltimore Marathon.

While Dave’s athletic career boasted its share of successes, including multiple conference championships, NCAA championship appearances, and earning All-American honors twice, it is his coaching achievements that truly shine. Notably, he guided Patrick Watson to the pinnacle of success, with Patrick clinching the title of the 2019 NCAA D3 Men’s Individual National Champion in cross-country. Dave’s transformation of Patrick, from a modest high school runner to an NCAA champion, shows his coaching prowess and ability to work with the individual.

Patrick’s story is just one of many success stories in Dave’s coaching repertoire. His coaching philosophy is deeply rooted in the principle of individualization, recognizing that each athlete is unique. Dave’s coaching approach varies from one individual to another, ranging from some runners training just three days a week while cross-training to others who consistently average over 100 miles per week. The key to unlocking athletes’ potential, according to Dave, lies in tailoring their training to their specific needs and abilities.
