Training Style
As a coach with 16 years of collegiate coaching experience, I’ve worked with my fair share of athletes. No two athletes are the same, and it’s fun learning how to best maximize each person’s experience. Despite the many differences I have seen in my athletes over the years, two fundamental similarities exist – they all want to run fast, and they all want to have fun. These principles are at the foundation of my coaching philosophy.
When developing training plans, I always take into strong consideration the goals and desires of my athletes. I evaluate where they are now, figure out where they want to be, and determine the best way to help them reach their goals. When writing specific workouts or structuring a weekly/monthly training plan, I try and best incorporate things that allow the athletes to enjoy the process in a structure that is feasible within their daily lives. Not everyone can live the life of a professional athlete or full-time coach, and it is very important to come up with plans that balance with the rest of their life goals.
Regarding training, I strongly believe in consistency over time and specificity to the target event. An athlete needs to be appropriately challenged for their body to adapt and improve, and it is always my goal to keep an athlete motivated to strive for greatness. I look forward to helping you hit your goals and having a great time along the way!

T.J. Garlatz
A proven coach with a strong history of success, T.J. is prepared to help you reach your highest potential as a runner.
He has a strong academic background and proven experience that helps him effectively coach athletes of all backgrounds and abilities. T.J. was a high school valedictorian, graduated magna cum laude from the University of Washington with a degree in Mathematics, and earned his master’s degree from Western Washington University in Human Movement and Performance.
Over his tenure at the University of Alaska Anchorage, T.J. has helped develop the Seawolves into a perennial national contender. The men’s and women’s cross country teams have consistently been one of the top programs in the NCAA. The XC teams have combined to place top eight nationally 15 times in the past eight years to go along with three NCAA podium finishes. His women’s cross country team has an active streak of 10 consecutive top 10 NCAA national performances. He has coached runners to win five NCAA national championships, 68 GNAC individual titles, and 105 NCAA All-American awards.
A runner himself, T.J. went from being an average high school athlete who never broke 10:00 for the 3200m in high school to winning the GNAC 10k track and field conference title and helping lead his university to its first ever NCAA cross country national championship appearance. Despite primarily focusing on his coaching rather than his personal running after graduating from Western Washington, he posted a 2:28 marathon best at the PF Chang’s Rock and Roll Marathon and has raced in a few USATF Club Cross Country National Championships.
T.J. met his wife while being teammates in college, and they have two young children.
